For every Western country the first, second, third priority is rearmament. Including erstwhile US allies need nukes. And as fast as possible. It may already be too late. Everything else is irrelevant waffle.
I’m scathing about the democrats election campaign, unforgivable, again and again they underestimated their opponents and ignored the voters and I assume the data
Not sure if it would made much difference ih he’dstepped down earlier or hadn’t even started. The Dems lost 10 milion voters, that s bit less than the population of my current home or the population of London
Isn't part of the Great Replacement Theory that it is the Jews 🙋♂️ who are going to replace the white race with dark-skinned migrants? ...Hence the chant, "The Jews will not replace us!" Asking for a friend.
From where I sit in France and talking with French people UK's toadying 'special relationship' is nausiating. Starmer must stop playing on it. UK's future is with Europe. US is detestable
Please, while agreeing with every word, Nick, we must keep working hard, try not to be too despairing.
Kamala's concession speech was decent, honourable - I found inspiring!
We have to work with the world, and the tools we have. Democracy is hard, but the least worst.
It is shocking that there were so many stupid Americans who did not see that, despite almost impossible odds, the Biden admin (NOT a dictator) accomplished a great turn around.
OK, nobody could, can fix the ME, but it was close until 7/10 worked its evil genius - deliberately to wreck, and maybe got many ethnic voters to sabotage their best interests?
We were/are all Hamas' - and now Putin/Trump's hostages.
But must hope - at 93 I still dream, hope, for my Great Grandchildren.
A woman who is a dual US - Canadian citizen living in Canada, has been the spokesthingy for Republicans Abroad at least as far back as the 2016 election spoke on CBC radio the day after Election Day "contextualizing" Trump's return to the White House as if his whole approach to the presidency was normal and people who are unhappy with the result, well, it's just four years and nothing to worry about. This, about a man who incited a mob to terrorize his former Vice President into refusing to certify the 2020 results and continued to lie throughout his campaign that he had actually won. This about a man whose approach to climate change is "drill baby drill". This about a man who is appointing anti-vaccine crank RFK Jr. to a position in Health.
Indeed, every reason to continue to speak out against Trump's behaviour & politics. UK Right Wing media, BBC Tory puppy dog & Tory press will 'normalise' him but once you forget the Insurrection, people killed on Jan 6th, the shocking danger to life meters away from VP Pence & Senate, charges from Georgia ( which some of his team have pleaded guilty), his climate denial and so on ...He has won. The Supreme Court, the Republican Party, and other legals are giving him immunity for his crimes so a Felon can run the USA. We do not have to be a party to the decline and fall of America.
To diminish the attraction of farage as an American stooge and give some strength in any US negotiation rejoining the common market is our main opportunity
Starmer spoke that way not because he is deluded about how much influence we have with Trump. He knows we have none. Trump was voted in by a clear majority of Americans and that majority (and his supporters here) shouldn't be dismissed or insulted the way BREXIT voters were here in the UK. Starmer is not trying to appease Trump, that's you're interpretation, but speak in support of the instrument that will eventually depose him, democracy.
I’m sorry Nick but I find this very depressing. I don’t minimise the challenges ahead but you seem to ignore the failures of the Democrats. It’s the economy stupid! And identity politics! Wake up. As for proposing the solution of rejoining the EU? Good luck with that one. The Democrats have just paid the price of lecturing people!
I feel it difficult but have to agree with your gloomy view of things. The only slight ray of hope is that most politicians do not carry out their agenda.
Is the Trump vote a function of ignorance, lack of education/information ? - in one way it is: they were subject to massive waves of media / social media DIS-INFORMATION according to most analysts.
This especially applies to both Low incomed ( 50% for Trump) & Non college (56% for Trump) & Young Males ( 43% for Trump). Yet again the lower classes are voting for the Far Right and quite a lot more so than the Biden election. As those private jets fly into Florida this weekend to celebrate their Corporate good fortune those on the Liberal/Centre Left/Left are left wondering how come so many vote for a party that will not improve their economic position. Because ,either the Democrats did not improve the less well off or their economic improvements were drowned out by other less important progressive policies and distractions. In both USA and UK the 'centre left' are forgetting their raison d'etre is to deal with 'class inequality' , the wide, ugly gaps especially by location, which in both countries is one of the worst in the western world. Progressives in the West think they can ape the Centre Right by diluting into a thin, mild version of centre conservatism. They can't when the lower/working class are hurting & being bombarded by a massive far right wing propaganda storm
Your picture choice should have been Janey Godley’s perfect summary of Trump. If UK employs that as basis for relationship with US for next few long years we won’t go far wrong.
In one respect Starmer is ahead of EU in hastening to Beijing to remind Big Mouth that we have other options as much of the Global South has been doing for years. At least China believes in the international order, as we claim to do too. It would also lessen anxieties about what the aged felon might do.

Yes, we must increase the risk of nuclear war !
I’m scathing about the democrats election campaign, unforgivable, again and again they underestimated their opponents and ignored the voters and I assume the data
The vanity of Biden is unforgivable
He wasn't vain... he was the man who beat Trump.
Not sure if it would made much difference ih he’dstepped down earlier or hadn’t even started. The Dems lost 10 milion voters, that s bit less than the population of my current home or the population of London
Trump didn’t gain votes…
Too many Americans ignored the data - not the Dems.

Yup

The EU is crumbling. No hope there.

When you call Trump's supporters "stupid", you explain with beautiful clarity why the Democrats lost this Election, as in 2016.
And why liberals are increasingly on the back foot everywhere.
It isn't brilliant to insult one's opponents.

Is saying you disagree with how people voted insulting them?
No, I'm not saying that.
It is if one makes attacks on them personally.
As has constantly been done, especially to supporters of Trump or Brexit, since 2016.
Crawling on one's stomach for Trump is pointless. Just leaves one's head nearer to his boot for a kick in the teeth.
Stand up and say 'We think you are an asshole but are ready to do business' Might just work.

Yep
No point in talking to these morons.
Morons who are so stupid as to win.
Trump had little trouble attracting American Muslim votes:
